This building was designed to house the Lafayette High School and Public Library. It was very similar in appearance to the Purdue Electrical Laboratory that Alexander designed the same year. The city grew more quickly than the school board had anticipated, causing the building to be overcrowded within a decade. An adjacent house was attached to the building and became an annex. The Public Library moved out in 1901 and steps were soon taken to build a larger high school building. Lafayette Jefferson High School was built in 1911 and opened in January, 1912. From June, 1913-March, 1914, the old High School was remodeled to house a vocational school and the superintendent's office. The building was used as Lafayette City Hall from 1940 until the completion of the new city hall in 1959. The Journal and Courier celebrated the demolition of the building for another downtown parking lot in 1959.
