The Jenks School on this site was demolished in 1900 to make way for the new Washington School. This is the only site in Lafayette occupied continuously by a public school since 1854, when the Eastern School opened on this block. In the 1970s Washington School was demolished along with the block to the east, and a new one-story building similar to Glen Acres Elementary School (prefabricated by National Homes Corporation) was built on the site. Early in 2005 the Lafayette School Corporation announced plans to close Washington and three other schools within the central part of the city, resolving to bus all students to suburban schools.
